Rwanda Scout Association committed to sustainable agriculture and food production

In a bold and inspiring move to address food insecurity and malnutrition, Scout Unit Leaders across Rwanda have taken part in the Food for Life (FFL) program—an initiative of World Scouting Africa. This transformative training equips young leaders with hands-on agricultural skills and essential nutrition knowledge, empowering them to become agents of change in their communities. The program focuses on boosting food production, improving dietary quality, promoting smart agriculture, and nurturing youth entrepreneurship.

From May 22–25, 2025, 34 Scout Unit Leaders from various districts gathered at the Centre de Formation Scout Huye (CFS Huye) for an intensive, four-day training. The sessions covered a wide range of agricultural topics, including soil types, their components, and effective fertilization methods. Participants learned how to assess soil quality and choose the right crops based on local conditions. The training culminated in a visit to a model community garden, offering a real-world example of sustainable farming in action.

To address the challenges of farming during Rwanda’s dry season—when traditional fertilizers often fail—leaders were trained in producing and applying 100% organic liquid fertilizers. They also explored fertigation, a technique that combines fertilization with irrigation, ensuring plants receive nutrients efficiently while conserving water. This method is especially valuable in both dry and wet seasons.

The training also introduced Smart Agriculture—a modern, sustainable approach that uses innovative techniques to increase yields while minimizing environmental impact. Scouts gained valuable insights into how agriculture can adapt to climate change and resource constraints, making farming more resilient and future-ready.

Beyond farming, the program emphasized the importance of nutrition education. Leaders explored how to produce and consume balanced, nutrient-rich foods and developed strategies to teach Scouts how to prepare healthy meals. These lessons are designed to be implemented not only within Scout groups but also in families and communities, promoting healthier lifestyles across the board.

The impact of this training doesn’t stop with the Unit Leaders. Each leader is expected to pass on their knowledge to the Scouts they mentor, who will then apply these practices in their homes and neighborhoods. This ripple effect ensures a far-reaching impact—encouraging sustainable food production, better nutrition, and environmental stewardship throughout Rwandan society. The program also opens doors for young people to explore agribusiness and food-related ventures as viable career paths.

The Rwanda Scout Association is fully committed to integrating food production and nutrition into the National Scout Youth Programme, enriching the educational journey of young people across the country. This initiative not only strengthens the Scouting movement but also contributes to national efforts toward a hunger-free, healthier Rwanda.

Scouting is a school for life—together, let’s journey to make the change!
